Experience gained from the Vietnam war led to the 'E' model Phantom with more power, more internal fuel, a slatted wing for better maneuverability, and most importantly an internal cannon. The United States now only uses the F-4E in a few Air National Guard units. Other countries still operate the type including Japan, where it is known as the F-4EJ. [See also F-4C]
